Chewy Black Licorice Chocolate Brownies

1 c all-purpose flour sift   stir stir pour press bake at 350°F about 40 minutes
½ c + 2 T (60 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
2 t ground anise seeds
½ t kosher salt
¾ c (6 oz) unsalted butter, melted whisk whisk
½ c granulated sugar
½ c packed brown sugar
3 large eggs  
1 t pure vanilla extract
2 oz bittersweet chocolate, chopped mix
 
½ c (3 oz) chopped soft black licorice chews
   
  1. Line a 9″ square baking pan with paper or foil, leaving 2″ of overhang on 2 sides. Brush the paper with butter.
  2. In a medium bowl, sift the flour with the cocoa powder, anise seeds, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk the melted butter with both sugars.
  4. Whisk the eggs and vanilla into the sugary butter.
  5. Stir dry ingredients into wet mixture.
  6. Stir three-fourths of the chocolate and licorice chews into the batter.
  7. Put batter in pan, smoothing the top.
  8. Gently press the remaining chocolate and licorice chews onto the batter.
  9. Bake at 350°F for about 40 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, with a few moist crumbs attached.
  10. Cool completely, then lift out of the pan using the paper.
